Back Pain Treatments

Back Pain Osteopathy Treatment Clinic covering Croydon & the Surrounding areas

Back pain can range from acute to chronic and can be caused by a variety of factors, such as lifting heavy objects, sudden movements, extended periods of inactivity, or sports injuries.

Treatment typically involves a combination of case history, orthopaedic tests, manual therapy, and rehabilitation exercises.

Osteopathy is a great way to treat both acute and chronic back pain and help patients achieve a more pain-free lifestyle.

Back Pain & Your Anatomy

The human spine is made up of five sections:

The cervical spine (neck), the thoracic spine (midback), the lumbar spine (lower back), the sacrum and coccyx (Sitting bones).

Ribs attach to either side of the thoracic spine and attach to the sternum at the front of the chest to form the rib cage.

In order to maintain stability and posture, a complex network of muscles and ligaments are attached between the vertebra and the rib cage.

Back Pain Osteopaths
Acute & Chronic Back Pain
Back Pain Types: Acute vs. Chronic

Back pain may begin suddenly (acutely), typically as a result of a single event, or gradually over time (chronic).

Acute Pain

Most people experience severe back pain at least once in their lifetime. Although it can occur anywhere in your back, the lower back is the most frequently affected region. This is because the majority of your body's weight is supported by your lower back.

Usually, you'll have severe back pain just after lifting something heavy, moving quickly, remaining still for an extended period of time, or getting hurt while playing sports. The pain is often caused by a sudden soft tissue injury to one or multiple structures in the back causing localised pain and muscle spasm.

A thorough case history and specialised orthopaedic tests are used in combination by our osteopathic team to determine which structures in a patient's back have been damaged. Once the issue has been identified, we use manual therapy, including soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, and spinal manipulation as needed.

Chronic Pain

Chronic back pain on the other hand can be caused by poor postural alignment, scoliosis, spinal arthritis or previous injury to name a few. At Sanderstead Osteopaths specialise in treating chronic back pain.

Similar to acute back pain, we will obtain a thorough case history and run orthopaedic testing to determine which back tissues are affected. We will analyse your gait and your postural alignment to determine how we may use manual therapy, such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, and spine manipulation, if necessary, to reduce the chronic problems you are experiencing.

Back Pain Rehabilitation Exercises

After your treatment, we might suggest rehabilitation exercises according to your requirements. Based on the area of your pain, our practitioners may offer personalised exercises for you to do whilst at home to ensure you stretch and/or strengthen the areas that require specific attention.

Degenerative Disc Disease

DISC DENGENERATIVE DISEASE

Degenerative Disc Disease Treatment

Degenerative disc disease is another common cause of back pain. This condition occurs when the discs in the spine begin to degenerate, leading to pain and stiffness. As the condition progresses, the discs may lose height and become less flexible, which can lead to a condition called spinal stenosis. This is a narrowing of the spinal canal that can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, causing pain and other symptoms.

At Sanderstead Osteopaths, we use a variety of techniques to alleviate the pain caused by degenerative disc disease, including spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy, and exercise therapy. We also work with our patients to develop a personalised exercise and rehabilitation program to help slow the progression of the disease and manage symptoms.
